Supporting a Colleague

If a worker has disclosed information about a mental health condition, then supporting them in the workplace is essential if they are to feel encouraged and cared for.

In fact, according to Mind, 60% of employees said they’d feel more motivated and more likely to recommend their organisation as a good place to work if their employer took action to support mental wellbeing.

The aim is to work alongside the member of staff to come up with a personal action plan, identifying the triggers of their symptoms and deciding upon what support or changes are needed. Everyone will experience a mental health issue differently so it’s important that you look at each person’s wellbeing individually.

All discussions and agreements you come up with show that you are being supportive even the smallest of gestures can help.

Remember: communicate openly, agree on a support plan together and certainly don’t punish the worker for being ill.
